Our Story
The Philly Hoofin Dance Intensive was started in 2015 for the youth in the Philadelphia and Tristate area. Its purpose is to keep the Art form alive and to keep the legacy of LaVaughn Robinson’s Philly style of tap alive! We will focus on LaVaughn and his style of dance called the Philly style. We will teach his philosophy and approach to musicality. We will share video footage in and about tap dance in Philadelphia’s past. We will take a tour of the places on South Street where he danced and other place where he practiced under the streetlights. We will have other Master's that still teach LaVaughn style and we will have Master's that will bring their own percussive style to teach and share with our students.
Together, let's keep the Philadelphia tap history alive!
LaVaughn said to me when I was just starting to learn tap " I don't care how famous you get or how far away you live you make sure you come back here and teach 3 people what I taught you the way I taught you do you understand?"

House dance is a social dance and Street dance primarily danced to house music that has roots in the clubs of Chicago and of New York. The main elements of House dance include "Footwork", "Jacking", and "Lofting”. House dance is often improvised and emphasizes fast and complex foot-oriented steps combined with fluid movements in the torso, as well as floor work. Our students will partake in some of these elements in class.
Be prepared to sweat and please bring sneakers to dance in!
